I Forgot What Calm Felt Like

Coffee Talk Issue #5 cover featuring a cozy chair, coffee mug and notebook overlooking a calm lake.

I could feel my blood pressure fall the minute we arrived at the lake.

We hadn’t even untied the boat.

My shoulders relaxed.

My breathing slowed.

It was as if my body let out a deep breath before my mind even realized it had been holding one.

That surprised me.

There wasn’t anything extraordinary about the weekend.

We spent time on the boat, laughed with friends, ate good food, and caught up on life.

Simple.

But somewhere between the gentle breeze, the sound of the water, and conversations that didn’t have to end because no one was watching the clock, I realized something.

I’d forgotten what calm felt like.

I’ve always loved being near the water, but the older I get, the more I realize it’s not just because it’s beautiful.

It’s because something about it quiets me.

The emails can wait.

The laundry isn’t going anywhere.

For a little while, I stop thinking about everything that’s next and simply enjoy what’s right in front of me.

It made me wonder …

Maybe we all have a place like that.

Maybe yours isn’t a lake.

Maybe it’s your back porch with a cup of coffee before everyone else wakes up.

Maybe it’s a quiet walking trail.

Your garden.

A favorite chair by the window.

A bookstore.

Somewhere your shoulders soften without you even realizing it.

Somewhere you can just breathe.

Somewhere along the way, I think we’ve convinced ourselves those moments are optional.

Something we’ll get around to after the work is done …

after the house is clean …

after life settles down.

But what if we’ve got it backwards?

Maybe those are the moments that help us handle everything else.

I’ve realized peace doesn’t always arrive in big, life-changing moments.

Sometimes it shows up on an ordinary Saturday afternoon with people who let you be yourself.

Out on a quiet lake.

In laughter that isn’t rushed.

In conversations that don’t need to end.

Maybe that’s what I’ve been craving all along.

Not a vacation.

Not an escape.

Just more moments that help me feel like myself again.

So this week, I hope you find your version of the lake.

The place where your breathing slows.

Where the noise gets a little quieter.

Where you remember that the world will keep turning even if you pause for an hour.

Those moments aren’t a distraction from life.

They are life.

The coffee will be waiting.

See you next Sunday.

I’ll save you a seat 💙
