And Just Like That, It’s August

I’m not sure how this happened, but somehow July is over.

And just like that, it’s August.

There’s something about this month that makes summer feel different.

In June, summer feels fresh and new. In July, it still feels like there’s plenty of time. But August arrives, and suddenly you start paying a little more attention.

You notice things.

The warm breeze on the deck in the evening.

The way the light turns everything golden just before sunset.

A doe and her fawn wandering into the backyard. Because, of course, you have to stop whatever you’re doing and watch.

You head out for a quick evening walk and come home much later than planned because you ran into a neighbor and stood there catching up on the day.

The weather. The kids. The neighborhood. All the ordinary things that somehow feel better when they’re shared outside in the summer air.

There’s no rush to get back inside.

Maybe that’s what I love most about summer evenings.

They give you a little more room.

Room to linger. Room to talk. Room to notice.

This past weekend, I spent time with my girls. We browsed our local bookstore, went out to dinner, and stopped for ice cream at a favorite spot. I finally got my hair colored too, and let’s just say that was overdue.

And somewhere between the appointments, conversations, walks, and evenings outside, July quietly became August.

Nothing especially dramatic happened.

And yet, when I look back at the weekend, it feels full.

I think sometimes we expect the meaningful parts of life to look bigger than they actually do.

We expect the trip. The celebration. The milestone. The thing worth announcing.

But most of life doesn’t arrive that way.

It looks like time with the people you love.

Feeling a little more like yourself again.

An ordinary evening that somehow ends up feeling special.

Small things, maybe.

But they don’t feel small when you’re living them.

August has a way of reminding us that summer won’t last forever.

Eventually, the evenings will cool. The windows will close. We’ll stop lingering on the deck and start heading inside a little earlier.

But we’re not there yet.

There is still summer left.

Still time for walks after dinner.

Still time to sit outside a little longer.

Still time to notice the light.

Maybe August isn’t here to tell us summer is almost over.

Maybe it’s here to remind us to notice what’s still left.

The coffee will be waiting.

See you next Sunday.
